The next morning, Zan’s heart thudded hollowly in his chest as he loaded Ronnie’s luggage in the chauffeured black Lincoln Town Car. Ronnie had texted him, pointedly telling him he was giving her a ride to the airport. Nearby, on the sidewalk, Vicky chafed her arms and examined dust, in another world for all the attention she paid him.

When he’d first seen Vicky here too, he’d been relieved and grateful, thinking Ronnie had arranged it so they could talk things out. Ronnie had arranged it, but not to talk.

He kept glancing at Vicky, hoping to meet her eye. Hoping to have the conversation they hadn’t been able to have since Ronnie had torn them apart, even if it was only unspoken.

Hoping to tell Vicky that he wanted, so very much, to see her again.

But Ronnie was standing there, tapping her toe, slicing everyone with cutting glares, him and her sister both.

Probably why Vicky, the tips of her ears very red, was staring at the sidewalk.

It wasn’t fair at all. Why should she pay the penalty of her sister’s wrath because he had lost control? He tried again to tell Ronnie that. “Ronnie, it was my fault, not Vic—”

“Darling Alex. Do you think I care?” Her tone was all sugar, like a poisoned soft drink. The venomous speed with which she cut him off shouted her true feelings. “Well, I don’t. I don’t care one bit.” The B in bit was explosive, the T snapped off as she’d probably like to do to his head.

He sighed. This was a lose-lose situation and why clean starts were so important. He’d screwed that royally.

The awkward, painful silence seemed to stretch forever, but only a few moments went by as he and the limo driver loaded the luggage. The driver shut the trunk with a click. As if it was a cue, Ronnie dropped her tightly crossed arms and advanced on her sister.

Vicky finally looked up. The misery on her face tugged at Zan’s heart. He took one step toward her.

As if Ronnie sensed him moving, she glared at him over her shoulder. “Alex. Why don’t you wait in the car while I say goodbye to my sister?” The words were honey-frosted anger.

He ignored her. His gaze had finally meshed with Vicky’s. And hers…damn, her eyes were pleading with him not to make this any more difficult than it was. He faltered. He opened his palms to her, knowing his need, his pain, was on his face. Are you sure?

She nodded, flushed red, and glanced away. Nodded again, tiny, almost to herself.

He balled his fists. What the hell did that second nod mean? Did she want him but was trying to convince herself he should stay away?

Or was that final peal of certainty a sign she never wanted to see him again?

His fingers clenched, and he knew from the ache starting in his head that he was grinding his teeth. He, Alexander Sinclair, communications expert, couldn’t read that nod, and it was driving him crazy.
